Description

In this dynamic and interactive workshop, you will learn how to bring comics into your classroom as a successful learning technique. The workshop will explore the convergence of literacy and artistic disciplines inherent in comics, and demonstrate how both making and reading comics can be a powerful way to build reading comprehension skills such as prediction, inference and fluency. Workshop participants will experience:

Ways to introduce cartooning/visual storytelling strategies to students
Suggestions for coaching students to express character, plot, and drama through images
How comics can be used to invite prediction, inference, and foster fluency in a student's reading; and
Cartooning strategies to teach to different kind of learners

There is NO NEED to be an artist! Pencils and paper will be provided, and you will leave with out-of-the-box aids that include a 64 page kit with complete lesson plans.

Workshop presenter will be Jerzy Drozd.

Jerzy (@Jerzy) is a cartoonist and illustrator, which is to say, a person who writes stories visually in the medium of comics. He is a teaching artist as well, which is one of his favorite jobs. He teaches comics classes and leads presentations on comics year-round in the southeast Michigan area and beyond. Aside from working with thousands of students, he conducts workshops for teachers on the benefits of bringing comics into the classroom. He is also one of the founders of the Kids Read Comics Celebration, a yearly event held in Michigan featuring hands-on comics workshops for young people and professional development workshops for adults.

This workshop is "pending approval" for 5 state continuing education clock hours (SCECHs).

This workshop is free for Foundation club members. There is a $25 fee for all others to attend. Lunch will be provided for all.
